A mestizo is how in Latin America people of mixed ancestry are called. It is most used to call people of white-amerindian ancestry, but can be used to any people of mixed ancestry. That's what the people in your country see as the "Hispanic race". Here in Latin America there is no "hispanic race" or "latino race", we call people what they are: white, mestizo, black, indian, asian, etc. In most Latin American countries the majority (but not all) of the populations is of mixed ancestry. Interacial marriage is not a new thing in Latin America.
