Anyone who has served in Iraq would tell you that very few people would volunteer to return. They will return and do their duty but if asked would they like to, the answer for most is no. There is so much to be seen and done that the American public will never know about unless you have a loved one in the military. My husband served during the very start of the war and was there for the biggest battle of the war. He also stayed in the palaces and had to help feed the starved lions and sleep a few feet away from a dead Iraqi body that was bloated beyond belief and smelled in a way there are no words for. A lot of our friends were wounded and soldiers get the job of cleaning the blood and flesh from the vehicles they were attacked in. Do you have any idea what that will do to a person? Could you watch your friend get blown to bits and burned inside a vehicle and then after scraping what parts of him you can get off to send home for the funeral, go and clean and scrape the burnt flesh from the inside of the truck? It does permanent damage that will never be erased from their memories. Why don't you volunteer for that. They all volunteered in a way by joining the service in the first place. Let that be enough.

From what I understand, the vast majority of the 20,000 soldiers are Iraq veterans. I've heard that some came from Afghanistan. What's needed is more like 40,000 troops. I don't think this is going to make a dent in ending this war.

That's the point lot of people make. If it is struggle for our life as he claims all the time why not ask more to serve and save energy...etc. And why not call for draft. Why is it that he calls it fight for our freedom and our security and most important struggle of our life time, but he only asks volunteer force to take all the burden. It's really bad if you think about it. He's basically asking those few volunteer force to work overtime to make us safe. He talks big about war on terror and our struggle to fight people who 'hate our freedom' but he sure doesnt seem to know what it takes to do what he claims.

Let's fix two problems. You get caught illegally entering the US, your punishment is to go to Iraq for a year, if you survive, you can begin the paperwork for becoming an American when you return. If you don't survive, we will drop your box from a C -130 with a US flag parachute over the capital of your original country. Watch the illegal problem clear up from that deterrent.

If you mean by the draft, no. I don't know if anyone in the military can "volunteer" for missions.
