Let" talk about Kathryn Johnston. She was a 93 year old woman who police were serving with a "no knock" warrant. They were going to search her home (she lived alone) in Atlanta, on a bad tip. She had a gun. When the police broke down her front door and tried to enter the home she grabbed her gun and opened fire. She hit 3 police officers before they killed her.
Not many 93 year old women that I have met are drug dealers but apparently the Atlanta Police thought she was. I would like to have heard more about thins. It happened about the same time as the Sean Bell shooting.

Ok, let's see....
1. He wasn't shot 61 times. There were a total of about 50-51 rounds fired. A few hit him but not all.
2. He was armed. Car (+/-3000 pounds) + powered= deadly weapon. If you don't believe me ask some traffic investigators that spend the better part of a career picking up dead people off the road after they've been hit by a car or going to hospitals to interview crippled victims. A car is a weapon. People need to get over this belief that only a gun is a deadly weapon.
3. He tried to run over a cop. That's assault with a deadly weapon. That means he tried to cripple or kill the cop. That means the cop gets to shoot back to protect himself.
4. Other cops see this and that means they should shoot to protect someone else (see threatened cop above).
5. Cops are trained to shoot to stop the threat. This means you shoot until the threat stops. If it stops at 1 round, you stop. If the threat stops at 10 rounds, you stop at 10 rounds. If it takes 50 rounds to get some low-life to quit trying to hurt or kill you or someone else then it takes 50 rounds.
Mental status of assailant - irrelevant
Marital status - irrelevant
Parental status - irrelevant
The only relevant facts are:
Did he have the means be it size, weapon, etc - yes
Did he have the intent to kill/cripple - yes
Did he have the opportunity to kill/cripple - yes
Was the threat immediate - yes

No one should be shot 61 times for any reason. No one should be shot for no reason. I don't know the case you are talking about, but it is highly unlikely that he was completely innocent.
