For these kind of problems, you work backwards. So, starting with 24, you divide (opposite of multiply) by 2.
24/2 = 12
Then, 5 is supposed to be added to n, so instead of adding, subtract.
12-5 = 7
Therefore, n = 7
You could also just write an equation to solve this. I think the above way is easier to do in your head.
(5+n)(2) = 24
10 + 2n = 24
2n = 14
n = 7

If you say that n is that number then adding 5 gets you n+5
Now multiply it by two and you get 2n+10
That equals 24 so you have an equation
2n + 10 = 24
Take 10 away from both sides of the equation and you get 2n = 14
So that makes n = 7 which is the answer.
