Does anyone have any information on the praying mantis(mantids) in Florida? Something strange is going on. Many were found dead by a friend on a walk home, all laying face up. January is not the right time of year for these creatures to be out and about as is and to find that many? Something strange is happening and I'd appreciate any help that can be given.

They would normally have died some time ago, but as the weather has been exceptionally mild it's not surprising that some are only just dying! Actually, I'm surprised that they ARE dying - have the nights got colder or something??? Or maybe someone's been spraying insecticide on the plants?

Mantids don't die because of the date, they die of cold or injury. But most insects end up in the 'flat on the back with the legs drawn up in front of them' position when they die - it's fairly standard. If you search for images of dead insects, you'll find that most of them are on their back, face up, with their legs drawn up close to the front their body.

Were they fully grown mantids? One of my pet mantids is still alive - she's kept indoors though, otherwise she'd have frozen to death here in Tokyo weeks ago! If they were tiny mantids, you might have a shortage next Spring, because that would mean that the oothecas had started hatching in the warm weather. I hope they WERE all adults!

There has been weird stuff going on up north here too. It was 72 degrees Sat in Boston. We still have green grass on the ground, and there are coyotes coming out and attacking people in the daytime on the north shore. This past week 3 coyotes were caught. One of them after he malled a man. There was one reported by a woman walking her little dog, and was caught, and there was another one that went after someones child. This whole winter is weird. That is interesting though, you should post if you find anything out. It is an El Nino year. Good Luck.
