You're asking the wrong question. Is a common pleco to big for a 55 gal tank, since they grow to over a foot long. No, you can do it, it will just look odd.

If you're getting this fish get something that does a good job like a borneo sucker or best yet, a true siamese flying fox! Two best things to keep your tank clean. Or if you like cat fish, stick to smaller ones, try a gold nugget, they're gorgeous!

The real question is this. Is a 55 gallon tank large enough for an adult pleco. And the quick answer is yes, but I would recommend an even larger tank (90-125 gallons) for an adult common pleco.

No, but expect him to reach about 14inches before he stops growing in that size tank.
