I'll second the Stephen King recommendation. It's an especially good recommendation because he has quite a few rather short novels available. At one point, many of his stand-alone novels were part of short story collections. Try, for example, The Long Walk, Thinner, or The Running Man. All are a really quick read, and full of horrible things!!

I don't read horror, but I do like a good mystery. I recommend authors Dorothy Gilman,LIlian Jackson Brown, and Earlene Fowler.
I have never read Agatha Christie, but heard that Murder on the Orient Express is her most popular one.
