the game recognizes the multitap but does not recognize the controller plugged into the multitap

It depends on the brand. More commonly, it is because you may have purchased an after-market product not devised by Sony. Alot of Sony product anymore have system encryptions so that only Sony products can be "intermingled".

Sometimes some ps2 games will need for you to connect one controller in the controller 1 slot and connect the multitap on the second slot. Try that , hopefully that'll work. Also some third party controllers don't work when plugged in to the multitap device.

all i can say is get rid of it and get the sony-made one, if it is sony made, then demand a refund
