Yes filtering out pornography and all of these social sites for middle schools & elementary schools is fine but I think that at the high school level students do deserve more freedom to access whatever site they want on their own time as long as it is not porn or bad chat rooms.

Yes I know that some school filters can be overridden by using proxy's and we will always be able to find a way through but when you are researching a topic or something and the site you need on is blocked it would piss you off to and that is when you must resort to the proxy's and etc.

I just think there is a bit to much censorship for high schools.

This is a highly debated topic. I won't offer you my opinion, but I will comment on the legality of it. I'm an education major, so I know a bit. I believe all school districts now are required by law to have students and legal guardians sign a Computer & Internet Usage policy. This agreement verifies that you understand the rules of the school system's computing privelages and agree to abide by those rules. This agreement would have been signed at the first of the school year, along with all of the other paperwork. Schools must have these filters as a legal action. They could be sued heavily if something were to happen to a minor as a result of dangerous computing that occured on the school premises. If you signed this agreement, then your rights have been waived and the filters are 100% legal. Sorry. Think of it this way: The school doesn't HAVE to have computers for you to use at all. It is a privelage, not a right. You could be forced to use a personal computer, or heaven forbid an encyclopedia. It runs under the same principles as visiting a friend's house. You must abide by the rules set forth by your friend's parents. If they were to have a computer filter, you would have to use it as well.

It's totally legal and there is no reason to stop it. When in school, you should be doing classwork not roaming around on the internet for things not related to school. That's the main reason why high schools block sites, not because they're "inappropriate". There should never be a time in school when you need to access a blocked site. Do whatever you want to on your own time.

FYI- this doesn't change when you get a job. Nearly every company monitors the sites their employees visit, and some monitor every keystroke you make. You can be fired for being on a site that you shouldn;t visit at work.

High school students are still considered minors and minors are not supposed to access certain sites.
Is it legal to filter these sites? Absolutely!
Is it moral? That depends on your morals!
Is it fair? No probably not. When you're 17 and have a job, are sexually active and feel all grown up, it just doesn't seem fair. But it is a good lesson!!!

Legal, Moral, and Fair are not equals. They are 3 completely different platforms we can use to judge!!

yes, filters are legal. It is simple, the schools act as a proxy parent in the absence of your personal parents since you're not 18. Because of this, they have the right to put filters on their own machines to make sure nothing objectionable gets on them.

ps- don't forget, most kids in schools are still minors therefore they should not have access to this type of stuff anyway

What do you propose "pc misuse?" You trespassed the pc, and also you reeeeeeeally would not have. you already understand that. Doy. Trespassing is going previous something you shouldn't flow previous, and that is what you probably did. besides the actual incontrovertible fact that i believe you've been unfairly punished, you probably did initiate it. i'm happy you're sorry, yet next time, with slightly of success supposing there's a next time : { you should restrain. you should get to the bottom of this. you shouldn't rationalize it. Yeah, it wasn't like you've been allotting crack or something, yet you probably did initiate an complete new "era." talk it over such as your significant, and that i propose really attempt to get an appointment with him/her. it really is what i might want to do, yet, fortuitously, i did not misuse my college possibilities.

I disagree with you. when you are in school, no matter what grade you are in, you are there to learn, not play around on the computer.
