Being an adult is more than age. You are an adult when you take responsibility for your own welfare, actions, wants and needs. Ultimately, the society you live in must also accept you as responsible for yourself, and in the U.S., that begins at 18.

When you accept responsibility and take care of yourself without much help from your parents and accept the fact that one day, you'll no longer be here. I used to think I was an adult, but I realize now that I wasn't mentally. After all the drama this past year has brought, including the death of my future mother-in-law from cancer, two close calls with my own mother and purchasing my first house, I realize that I should be grateful for what I have and can only shake my head when I listen to most others' my age. I'm not sure if I'd really call myself an adult yet, but I'm much closer than I was last year. I now agree that people shouldn't drink until they're 21, because if they're like me, that's when you really mature.
