Gold fish absolutely can't be kept in bowls anyway.
So pretty much your only choice is a betta.
Don't get guppies or other small fish, they need oxygen other than from the surface (ie: filter, pump)

You could get brine shrimp (sea monkeys) or snails if you wanted to.

Bowls all around suck. ;D

You should not keep anything in it. No fish does well in a bowl, especially a small one. Unless you are prepared to clean and water change every other day, do not treat any fish so inhumanely.

If you read about fish on the net or any book, fish bowls should be outlawed.

A paradise fish, a.k.a. a paradise gourami should do all right. They're in the same taxonomic family as the Betta, though, so you might not like it either.

Anyway... like gouramis and Bettas, Paradise Fish have what's called a "labyrinth organ." This allows them to breathe oxygen directly from the atmosphere. (They don't use this in emergencies like some fish that have mechanisms for breathing from the air -- they need to periodically "take a breath" in order to live).

This is because they live in shallow, murky, slow-moving, *low-oxygen* water like rice paddies. So a bowl should be all right, although some fish enthusiasts might disagree with me.

The reasons why Gouramis wouldn't be good bowl fish is because they're usually larger and they generate a lot of waste.

However: Do not totally plug the opening of the bowl with a peace lily like some people do with their Bettas. That's bad for them, and the only reason they nibble on the lily is because they're starving... Bettas are carnivores.

The only kind of fish you can keep in a bowl like that is a betta/Siamese fighting fish. Goldfish get too big and other fish need all kinds of supplies, like filters and heaters.

Instead of fish, you might try ghost shrimp. They're more unusual and, in my opinion, pretty cool looking.

Nothing. Other then a betta, the only fish that will tolerate no heater no filter are zebra danios and white clouds and they need more space then a small bowl.

Fill it with water, put a rose on top.

You should keep colorful rocks or small plants. Fish will die in the small bowl poisoned by there own waste and lack of oxygen

Really the only fish you can humanely keep in a bowl are bettas. Other fish will die or just have a really poor quality of life.

try using it as a terrarium for plants -- tropical fish need warm water and stablity you can't provide in a small bowl.

just beta fish. the only other fish i know of that can be happy in stagnant water is a paradise fish. but they need more space. get a betta. other than that you are being cruel.

the only reason it is ok for betas is because it is simmilar to their natural habitat in the shallow puddles in rice feilds.

gold fish do not belong in bowls. they create alot of waste and need good filtration
