I'm Filipino and here's the lists you wanted:
1. Everything is cheap but you must hold dear to your future wife.
2. There is no divorce here, so you are guaranteed a lifelong companion.
3. There must be some incentives if you retire here, because the government is positioning this country as a retirement haven.
4. You will have a lot of loyal supporters because you'll have an extended relatives of up to second degree by affinity.
5. It will always be summer but there are good places to live with cool atmosphere like Baguio or Tagaytay.
6. World-class beach resorts abound that only few foreigners know of.
7. You will always understand what's going on in your surroundings because people can communicate in the English language.
8. You have the money so you can sufficiently start-up a business with your wife to be.
9. Your wife besides being gainfully employed can also help on matters of your health.
10. Our country's economy is picking up and your coming over is just in time.

I am retired USN, a CPO. I have lived here in the Philippines the past 5 years. I formerally lived in N.J. USA. I am 45 yo and my wife is 38.

I cannot say I can give you 10 good reasons to live here , but I can give you a few.

1. $1 is 50 pisos. More or less. What does that mean ? If you retired at E-7 like me you make a million pisos a year. You are a millionaire :).

2. You can live a life of Riley, no worries. Laundry, dishes and domestic resposabilities including driving are handled by helpers which are affordable and cheap.

3. I paid $50,000 for a house of 1,800 sqft and 597 sqmtrs of land. If you lived in a mobile home like me, you get a real house with a yard for a fraction of the cost of the states.

4. The people here in Iloilo are really friendly and nice. They mostly speak english and in other places in the world it is not the norm.

5. I can get almost any kind of "imported food" I want. Sure I like Philippine food. But I sure want my "no rice days".

6. Medical care is no sweat. We have 5 good private hospitals and one that is of international standars less than 10 minutes away, I also have an excellant HRC. It is all Tricare, so it does not cost me one cent. No costshare period.

7. There are 2 golf courses and a bowling alley less than 10 min fron my house.

8. There are many fine resturants here. Everything from German to American to Thai to Chinese etc. Illongos love to eat.

9. My subdivision is gated/gaurded. My neighbours are profesionals and well off pinoys. No roosters or trouble where I live.

10. There is no industry here. The people earn their living from colleges and agriculture/aquaculture. You wont be sucking smoke here !

11. Many nice beach and inland resorts incluluding Boracay 5 hours away. Here is 11 reasons why besides the warm tropical climate and beautiful scenery year round. Do I need to say more ?

12. Come on over and visit. I would be happy to show another retired USN guy around. Feel free to write me offlist.

Paul in Iloilo.

Is that enough ? Hope so and feel free to write a fellow retired CPO and tell you more about Iloilo.

Well, you're money will certainly stretch further here in the Philippines. One dollar is just less than 50 peso at the moment. That million peso a year won't last tho if you can't keep it under control, i.e family begging/stealing money can be a problem for a foreigner.

You could build a nice house here for a couple million peso. Being a foreigner, you'll look stupid if you can't afford to finish it or just opt for using bamboo materials etc. Land is pretty cheap. I've been offered 10+ hectares of land for under 2 million peso.

SOME people are nice. Some will just use you for you money tho. Or spread false rumors etc about you if you have some kind of disagreement. Quite childish really bu there you go. You'll find that people speak English quite fluently, when it suits them.

If you do intend to buy land in the Philippines, you'll want to get a look at the area first. Ask around to see if the area is prone to flooding etc. Almost everywhere has roosters, cows, goats walking around. You'll get used to that. Just across the road from us lives a couple of Carabao (water buffalo).

All the major cities including Cebu, Manila, and Iloilo are overcrowded and polluted. The traffic is a nightmare at best.

If you like golf, there are quite a few golf courses around. Nearest one to Iloilo is a half hour drive.

Anyway, best of luck to you!

Well, when I retire, I will certainly move to the Philippines too!

1. The money you'll be spending in the Retirement Home will give you a better value when you spend that in the Philippines.
2. The weather in TX is so humid especially on Summertime.
3. Boracay is better than Galveston. And oh! we have lots of beaches.
4. The poor people in the Philippines is better than those from Louisiana who populated Houston after Katrina.
5. In the Philippines, you know your neighbor. In TX or anywhere in North America, you'll never get a chance to know your neighbor because they're all busy.
6. Filipino People are friendly.
7. Most of the roads in the Philippines are on the native soil unlike in Houston, most of the roads are elevated because of flooding.
8. You can afford to hire household help in the Philippines. In TX, it is almost impossible unless you're super rich.
9. It is cheaper than Guam and Hawaii to enjoy the Pacific waters if you're into diving, surfing, snokerling or simply enjoy the sands.
10. Many many more!

most people are friendly.

thats the only asset the philippines have.

unless you are going to stay in the mountain or beaches, the city is toooo populated tooo traffic tooo dirty tooo much irresponsible drivers, communications and transportations are not that planned/developed. dsl is forever slow, trains and buses are far beyond new century's look. people spit anywhere, cars stop not only anywhere but even in the middle of the road not minding other cars behind, traffic enforcers only stand at the corner 'waving' their hands as if greeting you "welcome" instead of positioning themself in the MIDDLE and direct traffic. all good teachers and collage gradutes/educated citizens are out all over the world serving internationally as your humble SERVANTs (domestic helpers) or nurses, even doctors are in the brink of extinction because most (even high ranking hospital staff) have changed course taking nursing or gone into nursing training so that they can migrate and stay in the U.S. without restriction. electricity cost is highest in Asia, labor efficiency is low comparing with china thailand vietnam or any other asian developing area.

so, better stay in the land of cowboys with your nursing wife and just visit the philippines twice a year, you'll sure enjoy the best of BOTH place then.

I think the majority view of the Phillipines is to stay away but might I suggest that you consider Thailand. Money will travel just as far in Thailand, the people are perhaps the nicest in Asia, and there are some very beautiful places there. And from Thailand, you are much closer to the Phillipines if you wish to travel there occasionally. Panama is also an interesting spot to look into as well. Good luck with your decision.
