Own up to it. Another lie to your boss won't help you keep the job. Be cincere and apologize. This isn't about what you can do to get you out of this; it is about what you can do to make sure it doesn't happen again. Like you said, you messed up. Now take responsibility like a man. Your boss will respect your ability to admit your mistake. Even if he fires you, he will have something good to say. Because he will find out that you lied, even if you don't tell.

Be honest and you have a shot. As a manager I can tell you that I've fired people for less. Just last week in fact. It is your responsibility to show up and do your job, and calling off when you aren't sick is a terminatable offense. Lying about it even more WILL get your happy a** fired. Go in to work and talk to your boss. Ask what your options are. If they want to terminate you, ask if you can at least be given the option of quiting so you can make a fresh start somewhere else.
Sorry, but as my mamma always said...you made your bed, now lie in it.

Don't dig the hole deeper by trying to get a fake obit!!!
I would say report to work without any "proof" since there is none and take the consequences.
If you are lucky you will end up with a demerit or such and you can learn from the dumb thing you did and become a better person and employee!
Otherwise, start looking through the Help Wanted ads.

It's too late to save your ***, just try to save your job.
Go to work, ask to talk to your boss alone, confess all. Apologize for being untruthful because the attempted deceit is the real offense here. Promise not to lie again, assure your boss that you will make a new mistake next time, and when you get home start going through the help wanted ads.
As a supervisor, manager and executive I was able to forgive almost anything except dishonesty. If I can't trust the employee, not much else matters.
Good luck with this.

Asking for proof of a loved one's death (real or not), is an extreme violation of privacy, in my opinion. My husband called in to take me to the hospital one day, and his boss asked for proof that I was in the hospital. We said no way, my health is no one's business but ours. I would tell him you are not providing proof of the death of someone you loved.
Why is your supervisor so suspicious? Do you call in a lot? I think the best thing for you to do is tell him you don't have proof to give him, and just drop it, and think he will too. My husband's boss did.
Forget the fake obit. The lies could go on and on forever. I don't think I would fess up and tell my boss the truth because I think you'd get shown the door immediately. Most states in the U.S. are "at will" states, meaning that you can be fired for any reason at any time, unless you have an employment contract.
Make a personal commitment to be faithful and loyal to your job from now on. If you get fired, ask for a reference, and find a new job and start over on the right foot.
We all do stupid things, but I think it's outrageous to ask for proof of a death. Not everyone has an obit anyway.
Good luck. Whatever happens, don't be too hard on yourself. I think you learned from this, and I wish you the best.

You should call your supervisor back and admit that you lied. He'll be mad, and if he's a prick he could write you up, but honestly, you kinda deserve it.
If you're going to lie about taking a sick day, you're better off saying that you're sick - instead of saying that one of your inlaws died! That's not cool at all.
You could save yourself by saying that you had the stomach flu. There really was an epidemic of that last week [I know - I had it] and it was a bad flu bug. So you could say you were delerious when you called out, and that's why you were babbling about your brother-in-law's father's death, instead of admiting the real reason, that you were sick.
Give it a shot - it might just work, and it's better than compounding your first lie by claiming your inlaw died!

Ask your best friend to pretend as your "brother in law" on the phone, call the office and speak to your boss. tell you friend to start crying (on the phone), dramatize the situation (but keep it realistic) and say that you had to stay with him until he stops crying.
