Any city can get tornadoes. Tornadoes are formed when a cold/wam front join

WE expereinced a hurricane and I can recall many situations with tornadoes in Detroit. If I recall, it was either Opal or Hazel.
-The Grosse Pointe twister
-Tecumseh Twister
-Hamtramack Tornado (I believe these were all associated)
Then we just had severer thunderstorms many time (at least once a year) that prompts a tornado warning in SE Michigan.
Thne of course, we usually do see the remnants of a tropical storm/hurricane. Although we may not get all the win anf flooding the gulf and coastal states did, we still experienced the heavy tropical rains they get and ocassionally rotations in them (tornado weather watches/warnings).
Anyway, you asked a very good question.

Detroit definitely gets tornadoes. Usually they are weaker tornadoes that result from spinups along lake breeze fronts off Lake St. Clair or those that travel far inland from Lake Huron. Usually you don't hear about tornadoes hitting major cities because they are such small areas compared to the whole country that they don't get hit very often.
Detroit doesn't get hurricanes but they can receive the remnants of tropical cyclones. Sometimes these storms maintain the strength of tropical depression but usually they are just a bunch of rain.

The Detroit area gets tornado's, however they have not been as frequent as they once were. No hurricanes except occasionally some rain from the ones on the Atlantic coast.

detroit could get tornadoes but maybe only once in a very long time (maybe 75 years or more) but there are no hurricanes there that's for sure
