A short answer is the French Aristocracy had abused their power, bankrupting the government, squandering their wealth and privilege, while the majority of the population lived in abject squalor.
Charles Dickens wrote"A Tale of Two Cities' in response to the horrible conditions endured by the french people due to the uncaring excesses of the aristocracy, and the unfortunates caught in the middle of the upheaval of revolution.
The revolution in America was a great incentive to the French, in as much as showing it was possible for a european government to be overthrown, and the people govern themselves.

It was an inside job, some of the royales resented Marie Antoinette, and Louis XVI. She because she was delicate and pretty, and a foreigner, daughter of the Queen of Austria Maria Therese. Louis because he was a tinkering fool, and odd ball so to speak and his brothers made a mockery out of him as well as his grandfather the king before him, the grandfather had an evil mistress a tramp from the ghetto, and she resented them all. She conspired with Robespierre to reveal many untruths about the crowned couple, and made it easier for the starving diseased ignorant people to have an excuse to rob and kill and revolt. The financial and political situations were divided in two, rich and poor. Since the country of France was always on conquests and mostly lost, they were dwindling down in their treasury, their was famine, and the people grew more and more hungry. But lo and behold Marie Antoinette, never said let them eat cake. That was a rumored lie. She did try to help but it was too late. Plus they both were only figure heads. Most of the royales and their friends escaped with the stolen funds and were exiled. There was a scandalous lies printed for all the public to focus on pertaining to Marie, they said she bought an extremely expensive necklace with the treasury funds for herself. She did not and that was an inside job as it were, and a set-up. The people now had a fall guy, and many as a matter of fact. They were blinded by hunger and ignorance and really did not care they just wanted someone to blame and their greed grew stronger, and their hatred out of jealousy of the rich, all the things they wanted to be but had not the brains, the bloodline, or the where with all either. But they stormed the palace looted, and were so cruel and barbaric, they are in history of the most ignorant in history in Europe. A very manipulated war by the political powers behind the scenes. Austria, Germany, etc., but Great Britain helped the French to escape and gave them exile, for they knew the conspiracy was to open the country to anarchy to a total failure and then they would be able to move in and take hold. they beheaded the King and the Queen, mercilessly tortured them and their children, they tortured their little boy to tell the people that his own mother marie antoinette had molested him. Which was a lie. This inherently led to the justification of her execution. Those barbarians were pathetic excuse for human beings, there was no need, thus all the others involved were all foiled Napolean took hold and turned it into their worst nightmare. Turn around is fair play.
