It's quite interesting how people get offended by a simple word. If you look it up, you'll actually find the word appears a couple of times in Shakespeare (Hamlet, I believe).

The thing is, people shouldn't get offended by the WORD, but by the meaning behind it.

I write a lot of scripts, and I'll always try to avoid swearing if at all possible - after all, it isn't big or clever - but the thing is, if we want to see realism on our screens and not some Disney-esque schmaltz, then we have to remember that in the real world, people do use these words.

People should be censored for using derogatory language to deliberately single out and harm any particular group, but when that term is used in general to tell a story, then I think it is completely acceptable.

I am very much in favour of the idea of a watershed, and then having any language (with a suitable warning beforehand) permissible. After all, where is the sense in censoring if we destroy our freedom of speech.

The 'C' word is, don't forget, a collection of sounds formed by the voice box, lips and tongue - four letters strung together - nothing more. Why is it more offensive than any other swear word?

I've noticed it creeping in more and more, its now losing its impact, children never used to know words like that but the other day a trio of 8-10 year olds shouted it on a train. I blame Tony Blair!

Hopefully never!
Swearing is neither big, nor clever, and shows a lack of vocabulary in the user.
