I think that they were ahead of each other in their own rights. Lennon was imo a better lyric writer and McCartney a better melody writer. I also think that most people praise Lennon above McCartney because he is dead. Personally I don't go much on either of their song writing after The Beatles.

Lennon wrote with more emotion and had more talented writing capabilities, however, McCartney wrote catchier tunes that were simple, which was part of why the Beatles were so popular. I don't think as a team they can be compared to anybody. They have had 10 albums sell over 10 million copies, name me another songwriting duo that can say that..Most are happy when they go diamond once.

Oof: tough one! Personally, I think that their differences in taste and style were the key to their success. Although they actually co-composed very little after about 1964, the influence of one on the other had a lasting effect. It's unlikely that Macca could've written something as complex as Eleanor Rigby, for example, without John's poetic influence. Similarly, the sensitivity of Lennon's 'Girl' carries a lot of Paul's melodic style.
As for their solo careers, obviously Sir Mac has had a lot longer to continue developing. Sure, he's put out a lot of crap (frogs, bagpipes, pipes of peace...) but he's also penned some classics and has always experimented with different styles and been open to new influences. John's solo output was more limited, not just by being cut off in its prime, but also musically. However, his 1st solo album remains one of the most pivotal works in popular music, and the later song Imagine speaks for his generation maybe more than any other.
Over rated? It's easy to knock them both, as it is The Beatles, but history and statistics speak for themselves...

Lennon the lyrics.. Macca the melodies. Lennon was more searching,profound..sometimes bitter and even surreal. McCartney more cheerful and 'whistleable' Apparently 'Eleanor Rigby' has influences and contributions from both

Yeah my vote goes to Lennon - Imagine was a stroke of immortal genius that Macca could never have penned.
