You're going to need to prime the surface with a product as the water sealer has petroleum in it and needs to be neutralized before anything will stick....

you will need what they call a bonding primer such as xim or ici paints makes one called gripper if you using paint on a deck or wood floor it won't stand up to regular paint you will need porch paint if your Thompson's was oil base then use oil base paint ask Sherwin Williams as they own Thompson's they can problem tell you with out question what to use
