I have a 99 alero, and have a question that hopefully someone can answer. Recently, started this week, my car has been making a humming/buzzing noise. It sounds like its coming from the drivers side, and it is not the muffler (even thought at first I thought it was...just to give you an idea of what the noise sounds like) I then began to think it was because my tires were low on air, but those got pumped up and the noise is still there. The noise doesn't start until about 35-40 mph, and gets really loud from 40-50, but then quiets down to a muffled buzz at all the rest of the higher mph. I know this is proably hard to diagnose, but any guesses would be GREATLY appreciated.
Keeping my fingers crossed it isn't anything too pricey.

It could be your wheel bearings. Have them checked at your local tire dealer. That happend to me and the sound was pretty much the same as you describe here. If caught early, a good grease job would help before they go bad. Then it gets really sort of expensive. Good luck.

Sounds like you have one of the steel belts just starting to peek through the rubber on one of your tires'. I would jack up the tire I thought I heard noise from off the ground and sit down and rotate the tire so my hand was touching it while I turned it Slowly. You can't ware a glove but if you turn the tire slowly enough you'll be able to feel were the belt is coming though at. Another thing, if you turn the tire to fast and you find were the steel belt is starting to poke through you might need stitches so be carefull and remember your eyes won't tell you were the belt is starting to come though but your hands will. It is extremely difficult to diagnose car problems from long distance. I say diagnose, because fixing cars is very similar to medical issues. You wouldn't email your doctor saying I have this rash on my leg, its kinda reddish brown, and expect him to know what it is. I would highly suggest you take it to a competent shop and get them to take a look, or listen as the case may be. It could be something as mundane as the plastic inner fender flapping in the wind, but then again, it could be something more serious like a CV joint going out. If you are looking for a competent shop, ask around your friends, or even chat up some people in your area and find out where they go. People that are satisfied, typically will go back, and a lot of places live on word of mouth to build their reputation as a reliable and trustworthy shop.

Sometimes the same, I dont know what the sound is but my hyundai accent does the same, It might be and oil leak or something wrong with the engine, I dont really know, try to start the car and leave it running for a while, then come back, open the hood and try to hear the noize, if you dont hear it that bring it to the mechanics for a daignostic test. :)

You haven't eliminated the tires untill you try rotating
them. Sounds to me like something attached to the
body or frame is loose. Try taping things down one at a time untill the noise stops. Or maybe a body part is loose.
Have you bumped into anything? Maybe something
bumped into you.

i seriously wonder where some of you people come up with your answers. speedo cable to the wheel. it's not a 1960 vw. grease the wheel bearings, they're sealed hub units that can only be repaired by replacing. take it to some one competent to have them figure the problem out. if they want to diagnose the problem for free, let them but get a second opinion. good mechanics want to be compensated for their time so expect to pay for a diagnosis.

Can't be sure but did you check the heat sheilds around the exaust. One of those might be loose and vibrateing in the air flow under the car.

A buzzing sound? I would guess fuel pump. Does it sound like someone trying to breath...wheezing

I would check the speedometer cable that is attached to the drivers side front wheel. these can drive yoy crazy

check the transmission and its oil if it is not the wheel bearing noise
