A question as old as the sky. I love it. I would leave an IOU to the store. First dollar I'd make would go to them. After I pay my debt and apologize, I'd take what ever penalty is coming to me knowing my family will have enough to eat while what ever happens to me is happening.

No, if you're honest you know you can't wake up one morning suddenly, with no food, no money and surprise a family to feed. At some point pior to then you didn't have a family to feed and if you couldn't support the family you shouldn't have one.
But dealing with the unrealistic possibility. If you're strong enough to steal you're strong enough to work. I've seen lots of people with signs hanging on them that say will work for food. I think most of the time they are just scamming saps for money. That looks like an option.
I found a guy in the dumpster behind my office this afternoon, digging aluminum cans out of the dumpster. Said his truck had broken down and he needed money to buy a part. I don't think that is stealing, I figure trash is fare game.

yes i would, and i have. if you have a family, u do whatever is necessary to provide for them, even if it means stealing. But i draw the line at who or where i would steal from. Call me a modern day Robin Hood, but i would only steal from those who could afford to lose what i take. and if someone told me they were a victim of theft, i'd find out who took the item and steal it back. And no, I am not a thief. I just think that too many people in this messed - up world are needlessly going without basic needs. It's time for us to wake up and start doing something about it. hope this helps.

It sounds horrible, but a resourceful person in any American city can make a very good living diving in restaurant dumpsters. You wouldn't have to steal. Fast food can only stay under the lamp for so long, after that, it is thrown out if not sold. Grocery stores throw out "seconds" of vegetables by the bushel-full. Restaurants cannot reuse any food out out on the table. What does not get eaten gets tossed. Bakeries throw out bread that is past expiration date.
So, I would take that route, or I would exchange chores for bread. I believe very strongly in karma.

There is no need to steal bread. There are plenty of charitable people and organizations out there that would feed the family.

Because I am an honest person, I would have to say yes. Honesty to me means above all self-truthfulness. If there were no other way to put food in the mouths of my family, yes. I would explore every other option, but I assume you are positing a situation where other options are unavailable, in which case again, yes.

Not all countries have soup kitchens and pantries where desperately poverty stricken people can ask for help:
Don't watch the following video if you don't wanna be seriously peed off:

Not an easy question to answer, there are too many "what if's?"
I don't know what I'd do if I lived in a country like that - probably just spend most of my life half starving.

No, I would not steal. I may beg and try to borrow, but stealing is not the answer. There are many charities and PEOPLE out there that are willing and happy to help YOU!

a truely honest person would not go there until he/she has exhausted every means at his/her disposal to get the bread honestly. Under those circumstances, i would say yes.

Stealing has little to do with honesty. You should ask wether or not one would admit to the crime.
Morals don't feed hunger.
