First, have an answer set and rehearsed before the question is asked... you know they'll ask it so know your answer now. You're there to tell a memorable story in 60-90 seconds...

Start with something personal. "Well, I was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, my parents were workaholics..."

Transition smoothly to a positive business story. "It seemed perfectly natural when I started my first company at age 16."

Evolve to more recent accomplishments, being concise and factual. "Over the past 22 years, I've moved from building small businesses to larger, more complex divisions in Fortune 100 companies. Most recently, I led a successful turnaround of a 5,000 person manufacturing company. My team took them from bankruptcy to market leadership in two years."

End with a bit of humor or personal detail, to show you have a personality. "But living in Shanghai wasn't the right choice for my two kids, so I resigned last months and, well, here I am."

Smile. Stop talking.

What they want to know is how you will fit into the corporate environment. So, make a brief mention of your education (you can add a few details if your education was actually relevant to the job you are applying for), and why you want to do whatever job you are applying for. You can mention hobbies, if you think it has any relevance to the job. Charities and volunteer work might also be worth a brief mention. Try to keep it under two or three minutes, though. They've got your resume, after all.

Be as honest as possible. Talk of your interests, hobbies. This is the time in the interview that you really get to "sell" yourself. If you know stuff about the company ie: family oriented (family picnics and such stuff) then speak of how you enjoy having time to spend with family. Make them see how well you would "fit" into the company and how your personal habits would "fit" their company. But above all, be Honest.

Answer it briefly and without giving too much personal detail. For example: I like to work collaboratively with a team from time to time. I think it's more productive to keep each other up-to-date with your projects. If they want something personal (hobbies, likes/dislikes) keep it simple. Example: I've been collecting presidential memorabilia for 20 years. It's something I started with my Dad and enjoy updating once in a while.

You don't want to open a can of worms with a tirade about your religious, political or other personal beliefs. Keep your comments to something uncontroversial (I've recently lost 15 pounds. I've started riding a bike again and I really enjoy it.)

Good luck.

Focus your answer on how you are a goal-oriented person and a hard worker. Show by example, if possible, with a story that relates those things.

By asking this, they want to see your communication skill as well as this is for familiarisation. You should be honest with this question and speak beiefly about your academic career.
