a typical cd has 700mb's on it, or 80 minutes

you can store about 2 episodes of a tv series, that are 330 megabytes each

or just subtract the size of the video you want to place on the cd to find out if it will fit

I record TV progs onto my hard drive and burn to DVD. Typically a half hour prog takes up about 700-800Mb, although I believe you can use a compressed format at the expense of quality, a bit like mp3.

all are approx
you can not put dvd or vob files on a cd they go on a dvd disc

I think it depends on what format you are trying to store on the CD.

None you need to get a blank DVD and they could be all different lenghts like one hour to 5
