Shadow has the best answer.
Each Final Fantasy game has its own feel and style. Although (except for Final Fantasy X and X-2) each game is stand-alone, many borrow concepts and terminology from preceding Final Fantasy games.

Okay, the Final Fantasy games are not a series (Except for FFX and FFX-2, but we ignore those), so that becomes a very complicated question. Each Final Fantasy has a different plotline and characters, some better than others. If you're looking for a good place to start, I recommend Final Fantasy 7 (FFVII) or Final Fantasy 10 (FFX). Both are relatively easy to learn, and though every FF has it's own system, those will help you with the others.

7! Squall replaced into way too emo and that i could not stand the entire draw magic aspect on 8. the entire love subject felt extra overseas than the different video games. You junction and equip magic to statistics and then you will be able to't even use it until eventually you want to lose your stats! That witch boss replaced into lame, too. i have owned 8 because the day it got here out. I performed via it once and have not given it a second theory. FF7 is in my all time correct 5.

Rated one of the best game series of all time for the PS2. There are more than 13 if you count the ones for the gba and the horrid Crystal Chronicles. Kingdom Hearts is good but you can never go wrong with Final fantasy.
Here's a beginners summary of Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy VII: You play cloud, a mercenary getting revenge for the death of his best friend/fighting partner Zack. Soon you are joined by a Widower,Barret; your childhood best friend, Tifa; a flower girl of a dieing race, Aerith; the last of a mighty beast tribe, Red XIII; a ninja girl, Yuffie; a pilot, Cid; A vampire, Vincent. Together save the dieing planet and revenge your loved ones.

FF began as a simple game to accomplish a task then move to the next task to solve a story
Through the editions, stories got more involved, hidden treasures, clues, all for the single player.
Developed into FFXII which is an on-line game with thousands of players who interact to solve games/ get clues/ acquire treasures/ etc - can really immerse yourself into it and play with friends world wide, even if you just met them - has a phrase translator for the common game words/skills.
A new release guarantees a million sales at minimum.
wish I had stock in it - played FF 12 for 2 years - now out
I have a life!

That's like asking "What was The Lord of the Rings about?" It would take volumes to describe even one of the games in detail and there have been thirteen of them. Each game is its own complex world of colorful characters and magic and intrigue and evil villains and monsters galore! The only way to know a game like these is to play it!

final fantasy is a game about saving the world, through the growth of a central character - funny enough, that's what most single player console RPGs are about
each game? sure, i'll do what i can
-----
final fantasy (the first one) on nintendo - you are four warriors. the game doesn't tell you how they came together. chaos from the past is controlling the fiends in the present. they took the elemental orbs and are destroying the world - you, as four warriors, need to save the world
final fantasy mystic quest - super nintendo - this is an entry title, to help people learn how to play RPGs, but it's different than the others... you can jump in this one
final fantasy II - you are firion, and several other characters, and need to save the world (i never played)
final fantasy III - you are four orphans, from the surface world, who need to restore the balance of light and darkness
final fantasy adventure - you are "BOY" and must save "GIRL" - which means saving the world, and the mana tree's existance. the next game in this series was "secret of mana" - the name final fantasy was borrowed for the first title only
final fantasy legend (1, 2, and 3) - you must save the world. the name was borrowed, and later installments of this series went by the name "SaGa"
final fantasy IV - you are an evil warrior, and need to defeat your inner evil, before you can save the world
final fantasy V - you are a vagrant bum, who comes across a princess in need - you must help her, which eventually means saving the world
final fantasy VI - magic has left the planet - or has it? you are terra, a girl with a mysterious past - magic has returned... but the insane kefka is about to kill it again - by becoming a god. you must save the world
final fantasy VII - you are the emo known as cloud, a crybaby that's too wussy to cut yourself. you have delusions of grandeur, and think you are a clone of an earth spirit, not unlike kjata, who eventually summons a meteor to destroy the world. you must save the world.
final fantasy tactics - you are ramza - the lions war will tear the land apart, much to the delight of demons - you must save the world
final fantasy VIII - you are squall, and your girlfriend becomes a terrible sorceress in the future, and reaches back in the past to see you one last time... but when rinoa/ultimecia reaches back in time, she will end up destroying time - it is up to you to save the world
final fantasy crystal chronicles - you are a villager in a town. miasma, an evil cloud, covers the world - the crystal trees give a drop of dew that push the miasma back, but after three years, the dew is gone. you must save the world by ridding the world of miasma
final fantasy IX - you are zidane, half monkey, half ladies man, and it turns out that a girly man is trying to destroy the earth - the end boss will shock you, but only because it has nothing to do with the game
final fantasy X - you are tidus, a whiny brat that hangs around one of the coolest FF characters ever made, even if auron's a jerk. anyway, you are in a world run by an evil god like figure - you must save the world by destroying the evil, even if that means sacrificing yourself
final fantasy tactics advance - you are marshe, a little kid with an annoying piece of hair in front of his face that kinda sticks out. you are stuck in a world of monsters and fantasy, a world your friend wants to replace the real world. you must save your friend, by destroying the world
final fantasy X-2 - you are yuna, a quiet girl with delayed reactions, and no sense of humor. you've lost the love of your life - or have you? save the world to find out!
final fantasy XI - an online massive multiplayer RPG, go on quests, meet other people, fish, whatever - the storyline is depicted by events that real people do
final fantasy VII: Dirge of cerebus - not an rpg, it's a shoot'em up that explains some story behind a mysterious and quiet character from FFVII, vincent valentine
final fantasy XII - a princess runs away with air pirates or something (i have no experience with this game)
