I personally am against the whole idea, but what do you think?

These businesses have figured out that parents will buy this junk for their kids, because they are fearful that their precious little monster will be the only one without one if they don't. It's mindless consuming. If enough parents said "no," this kind of thing couldn't happen. Suggest, perhaps, that the kids pool the $ they would have spent for class rings and donate it to a homeless shelter in town.

As for all the graduations, don't get me started. First a big deal for kindergarten graduation w/ caps, gowns, party, etc. Then 8th grade graduation is almost like a college graduation -- costing the parents plenty of $. Students are expected to finish 8th grade -- it's NOT a mileston and it shouldn't be treated as such.

Thanks for asking this question!

Personlly, I have never liked class rings, just because they are so big and clunky looking. But to answer your question, I don't think middle school is the place for them. It is supposed to be something special for when you graduate high school. Nowadays, even kindergartens have graduations, then another one in 5th, and then another in 8th. I have even heard of "proms" for K, and middle school graduations. To me, it demeans the importance of it. A few years ago, here in Pittsburgh, 2 mothers got together and rented a limo for their 2 kindergartners to go to their graduation. It was on the news and in the local paper. These 2 mothers lived in public housing by the way; so there go our tax dollars being well spent.

I think class rings are stupid for middle school, high school, college, law school, etc.

Maybe I'd feel differently if I was going somewhere prestigious. I just find it hard to believe any of the class rings I was "privileged" to have the opportunity to buy were worth a blessed thing.

It was a waste of money in high school. I didn't bother in college. I think it's a dumb idea - what's with the middle school graduations and yearbooks these days? They didn't do that 15 years ago. It's almost like they are preparing for these kids not to finish high school.

class rings are important only for high school.
they can be expensive and to get one in high school it is a sign of respect for yourself...you did something and made it this far in education.
It is something to look forward to and would only be cheapened if a kid gets it for every grade.
That also goes for graduation from class to class. Every class has a graduation ceremony now days.

A lack of social skills is going to affect a person at any age. Which says to me that "lower class" parents (however that is defined) need to make a special effort to encourage their kids social development and communication skills, so they can be successful.

Umm...no? Why would you have a class ring in middle school it's a high school thing used to comerate your senior year.

That would be ridiculous. Most kids that age lose jewelry so it would be crazy to spend over $10 or $20 on them for accessories.

Also, how many people do you know that wear their HIGH SCHOOL ring after graduation? It's a bad investment.

When my oldest two were in middle school, they bought class rings. I thought it was too much! Now that my youngest is in middle school, they stopped. Must have had a lot of complaints.

It's just another reason to spend money on something a kid will wear for 2 weeks and then forget about.
