My major is Psychology and I have to take a Psych history class and this just does not interest me. A business major does not take business history. Why is this history important?

Because if you want to become an expert in your field of study you should know the basis of psychology. You should know how psychology all started because you need to understand how it became what it is today. And you can form you own opinions about different issues within psychology not just take peoples word for it.
Also, somewhere down the line people are going to ask you questions about the history and you'll feel like a fool if you don't know. Especially pay attention to Freud. People always ask psych people about him.
Been through this myself...you'll survive and learn if you keep an open mind.

IMHO, Psychology is pseudo-science at best, and they must teach you SOMETHING to justify your degree. If it were a pure science, then they would be teaching you the scientific basis for the theories and results. As it is, they have to teach you history to show you all the mistakes of the past. If you are smart, you will dive into the history of Psychology, and come to the same realization that I did that Psychology is still a guessing game full of misconceptions and folklore, just like chiropractors and witch doctors.

Just my opinion.

Because most, if not all Psychology is theory, not fact. It's a science that has few, if not no absolutes. In order to make yourself a good Psychologist, it's important to have all the theories you can, so perhaps, if one seems correct to you, you can build on it. Otherwise, you are just starting from scratch.

You must know from where you came before you can know where you're going!

How else will you learn about the processes that have already been tried and eliminated as useless?

I would think it's like regular history. How do you know where a culture is heading if you don't know where it came from. And how do you measure success if you don't know the failure?
