Depends on how mentally challenged they are. If it's just mildly, treat them like any other. You may have to be more patient, but their still human too. If they are severely mentally challenged, alot of patience and humility is required. Do your best to help them out and just have fun, they can be a great relief from regular people as their loyalty is genuine and pure. I grew up around a few and they were such sweethearts. Just go with the flow. If there is something you're doing wrong someone close to them (family) will let you know.

Define "mentally challenged." Autism? Asperger's? Down's Syndrome? Retardation?

How about treating them with respect and compassion, the way your folks should have raised you to treat everyone?

I was going to say "teach them how to use spell check", but then I thought maybe your are serious....so

You just keep it in mind when dealing with them that they may not understand where you are coming from, to them, you are the one with the problem, but do not speak down to them by being condescending.

Like a human being, but with a child's mentality. Respect them, dont stare, but dont avoid them they have feelings.

treat them like they treat you, enthusiastic, kind, and with lots of attention. Also never look down on them, we all have adversities to deal with in life.

don't try to talk any sense to them, just have to be patient and give them alot of love. never criticize or fault find, just try to encourage them.
