For me it's the belief that if they aren't pretty, they aren't worth anything. That isn't a behaviour, but it's damn annoying when your trying to have a conversation with somebody and you can totally tell they're just thinking about how they look...

Yes I'd go with your explanation. The other thing that annoys me is how they dresses not nicely. They are either worried about their looks or they wear so little that they need not worry. It seems to be one extreme to the other.
