i am a sophmore in highschool. i got a 3.8 gpa my freshman year, and a 3.8 again the 1st semester of my sophmore year.. i took the PSATs this fall and recieved a 1460 (new 2400 SAT).. i am expecting to improve when i take the PSATs again, and improve more when i take the SATs my junior and senior years.. not much in school activities... animal activist club president.. heavily involved in dance outside of school.. i am looking for a school either in southern california or new york..? any ideas on what school would be a good choice for me???

You need to do more of the "heavy lifting" here. As someone else said, check out www.collegeboard.com. And also see www.princetonreview.com, and read/borrow/buy the Fiske Guide to Colleges and potentially the book Colleges that Change People's Lives. Your PSATs are very low; you'll have to work on that to get those up significantly. Re: the GPA, it's too hard to say since we don't know if the courses you took were regular, honors or AP. We also don't know what you're interested in studying, or whether you'd like a big school or small school, whether cost is an issue, whether you want to be in the city or the suburbs or a rural area.

Please review some of these resources and meet with your school's college counselor for more tailored advice.

It's hard to make any sort of prediction considering its only early in your sophmore year of high school. As for schools you could try the UCs or in NY Elmira College, or Syracuse. Your SATs though definitely need to improve... a 1460 (even though PSAT) is just too low.
