It's always hard to break the ice. Sometimes people act grumpy because that's what they want you to see. That's their way of letting you know that they are pissed off. I would try to be extra friendly. If they are still grumpy, maybe when they go home, they'll realize that they have been a complete a-- for no reason.

I try not to take things personally when that happens.

As for jokes... I am not very creative.
