"The Exorcist" hands down. The idea of of small girl turning into that thing was almost too mush for me to handle. I saw it the first time when i was 15, and it scared me so bad I slept with the light on for weeks. No movie has ever done that to me since.

The greatest horror movie off all times is THE EVIL DEAD.

The original move had no budjet, and was filmed by SAM RAIMI.
Hes the same guy that filmed THE LADY IN THE WATER,
and THE VILLAGE.

The move starts off in the woods, where some college students rent a small cabin and camp out for a few days.

Underneath the cabin they find some research material from a man that was summoning demons, and while playing the recordings, the demons are stirred once more.

The first girl to get possesed by the demons starts mind reading, while looking out the window, and all hell breaks loose.

Again, very low budget, yet one of the scarriest reditions of possesion I have ever seen. I would have to say these girls were more scarry than THE EXORCIST.

The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (the original, not the remake).

This has to be one of the best horror films ever made because of 2 reasons:

1. It is based on actual events. The film is based on Ed Gein, a serial killer who murdered multiple people in Plainsfield, Wisconsin.
2. The movie doesn't rely heavily on gore. Most of the gore in the film is implied. You notice this when every time someone is about to get killed, they are put into a different room where you cannot see what is going on. You can only hear the victim's screams. The director, Tobe Hooper, used this to let the viewer imagine what was happening to the victim.

This is why Tobe Hooper's Texas Chainsaw Massacre was the best horror movie ever made.

The Exorcist is probably the scariest ( AND IMHO... THE GREATEST) horror movie ever. Based on a real life experiences of a Maryland boy in the late 1940's, it has one thing really going for it, exploiting peoples fear of the unknown or unexplained... evil manifesting itself in a small child is enough to scare the crap out of anyone ! Honorable mentions for The Shining, Jaws and Night of the Living Dead !

The original Exorcist was the scariest for me and I'm still searching for a scarier movie with no real success unfortunately.

The reason it was so scary was because you really cared about the little girl and the priest.

Most new horror movies fail to let you connect with the characters. When you don't care about the characters you don't care what happens to them.

Stephen King's It

Nothing scares people more than losing their children and death,
except maybe clowns.

Stephen King's Cuju

Woman trapped in a car with her child on a secluded farm while a crazed rabies infested dog tries incessantly to get in. Taught us all to have our autowork done in town now didn't it?

Stephen King's Silver Bullet

Quiet little town in the middle of Maine (i think) the last place you would expect to see a string of bazaar brutal murders including decapitation. Melt down your necklace Sally were a goin' huntin'!

For me it was the exorcists... anyone with a religious back ground just had enough faith to accept the fact what they were seeing was real, and it came from a documented case. There is no chainsaw murderer in Texas.

For me I would have to say the Exorcist and The Texas chainsaw massacre, because they were based on true stories.
