Ok, so many people are equating 'peaceful' with 'non-painful'... that's not want I meant. I meant peaceful as in calm, in one's mind. One can feel pain yet remain peaceful, can't they?

Yes, one can feel pain and remain peaceful.

Serenity is not freedom from the storm but peace amidst the storm. (not original but I don't know who to credit for it)

One can accept their pain and choose not to suffer from it. The only way to assure a peaceful death would be to accept death as fact. A peaceful death would only mean one thing, being not afraid to die no matter what the means of your death may be.

I will die peacefully no matter how it happens. Death is the greatest illusion.

Like so many questions posted on Y!A this one is far too large to be adequately answered here.
I would reccommend you read Grace And Grit by Ken Wilber. Thoughtful and intelligent, joyful and very sad, moving and wonderfully inspiring, this is the very best book I have ever read on the subject of death.
It tells the story of five years in the lives of the author and his wife from the time she was diagnosed with breast cancer till her death.
As a therapist I reccommend this book to any of my clients who has any concerns about death, their own or another's.
I do think that until we come to terms with our own mortality, it is difficult to fully engage with life.
Do read the book, John, it's a life changer.
PS. You may have trouble getting it on the high street but Amazon should be able to get it for you.

PPS Yes, she did die a peaceful death. Please feel free to email me, John, if I can be of further help.

Yes and no. You can try to be a healthy person all your life, but death whether painful or peaceful is something we have no say over. Get checked regularly by your doctor to prevent cancer or other diseases. Be positive and face it. Death will occur. Just leave your footprint on this earth for future generations to see.

Do your duty towards yourself and others. Treat others, like you wanted to be treated. Take responsibility for your actions.
If you do that, you never have to worry about being judged in this life or the next (if there is one). If you know you've tried your best in your life as much as possible, you can stand up and defend yourself anywhere anytime, when you're questioned. Don't purposely commit anything wrong. Many people in this world do something wrong, because they're under the illusion they're right, because of the lack of knowledge or lack of intelligence to analyze a given situation. It is not their fault. If your conscious tells you , what you did is right, then you don't have to worry.
This way, just before you last breath, you can confidently say "I tried my best in this life".

Say the Rosary... it promises a non-violent death, and has worked for everyone in my family. Insofar as peace at death, just remember the softist pillow in the world is a clear conscience.

absolutely not. I saw a show about a priest that was blinded in a car accident. Some kids threw a brick or something like that off of a bridge and it hit his windshield. Talk about bad timing! I guess you could NEVER leave your house, but then what if it caught fire and you burned to death? You just never know these things....

You must have misread the heading title as 'phantasy'.

The only thing one may be assured of in this world is that death will eventually get you. Control of the means is out of our hands.
