My husband and I will be in Manaus, Brazil late in February and early March. Does someone know a good tour company or guide? We would like a not too expensive adventure that would last for one to two weeks. Thank you

Depends on how rough you want to go. If you want a variety of choices try Iguana Tours. It is located at the Dez de Julho hotel in the heart of Manaus. It is a two minute walk to the Opera Theatre that was built in the days of the rubber boom. It is something to see. There are often live music and shows going on in the plaza there. The hotel is clean and has rooms with hot water. The staff is excellent. http://www.amazonbrasil.com.br/1index.php
But if you are wanting something a little nicer you can try the Hotel Tropical. It is set up on the Ponta Negra end of the City where you can stay in rooms that range from medium to luxurious. All the ambassadors and upper class stay there. The Pools are awesome and so is the food. They offer a wide option of tours, but keep in mind it will be a nice price too....but safe and worth what you pay for. If you are really the adventure type, just hike down to the boat docks and rent a boat with the many men there that know the area and how to rob you blind as well! I live there and have had my share of run ins with butcher knives! Ha ha. Just be smart, because it is a wonderful place to visit and once you go, it will stay in your heart forever. We live up in Barcelos where there is great Peacock Bass fishing and I recommend that you try that some time as well if that is your type of vacation. Barcelos is a sleepy little town up river from Manaus 50 minutes by plane or about 32 hrs by our river boats. Since you are coming during Carnival time....you may need to check if anything is even available. The city will be crazy and we shut down for several days around there! Hope you enjoy your trip.

Swallows and Amazons runs trips out of Manaus. It is run by expat Mark Aitchison, who also writes a column for BrazilMax.com. BrazilMax also has a discussion group dedicated to the Amazon.

You should take a cabin in a boat heading to a city called Santarem. From there you take a bus to a place called Alter do Chão. It is a gorgeous river beach in the heart of the Amazon. The colour of the water is crystal clear like in the Caribbean sea.
Very cheap and fun.

DO NOT USE SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS OUT OF MANAUS! That guy, Mr. Aitchison, runs illegal trips into Indian territory protected by FUMA. He's a major slimeball, my trip through them was HORRIBLE!

in case you bypass into the water, do not pee in it. Parasites will swim up into you even as your urethra is open. it is a few thing many Brazilians study. I stay in the bay section too. i'd be going back to Brazil in June. remember to write down me back to inform me the way it went.
