Of course you can deposit a check in a checking account. Thats' what happens to most checks (or walmarts eats them).
If your credit is good or yuor account isn't in arrears most banks wil give you credit immediately for your checking account.
However if you deposit a check draw it out and it balances it's the same thing as a bad check. Banks will go after you.\
They will spend thousands to collect a few hundreds.

There are 3 to 9 day holds depending on the amount of the check, in order for the check to clear.
