I was going to also say Minnesota. I have pictures of the blue skies on a cool October day. I have to say I never liked th ice when it came to driving. The snow is beautiful especially if you like to ski or any of those outdoor sports. In the summer there are the lakes to fish on, and go boating. I thought they paid
good wages especially professionals. They had plenty of activities like the ballgames, the Mall, the opera, and theaters not to forget bus and planes out of the Cities. Lots of nice people there. If you don't live too far from work driving shouldn't be too big a problem. I'm not in favor of living in The Cities, but going there is fun.

The Lewis and Clark Valley (Lewiston, Idaho and Clarkston, Washington). As it is a valley, it doesn't get much snow (people do play golf in the winter there). It is small, and the people are home-town friendly. There is Albertson's, Walmart, a mall, several banks, all the fast food and pizza places, good hotels, reasonable motels.
It is easy to get to Oregon, and other parts of Washington and Idaho from Lewis and Clark. There are camp grounds, parks, good schools, libraries, beaches. Virtually everything you'd have in a large city--within just a few miles of friendly faces. Lewiston has its own airport, Greyhound Bus terminal, and a downtown with some nice restaurants and antique/flower/other shops. Clarkston has docking for boats, etc.

Illinois is a great state, we hardly get snow maybe 1-5 inches a year. And we have great schooling programs if you look in the right places.

Midwest and North East seem to be on decline, also central farm states. All has to do with jobs moving.

Minnesota is beautiful, even though you will have the snowy winter. Problem is that the really warm places to live are full of crazy people.
