First I'd ask them if they needed a place to stay, then I'd ask them if they had enough $$$ to get by on, then I'd give them my shoulder to vent on, & then I'd offer them any suggestions I could to help them get back on their feet. I think this "plan" would work for most kinds of "disasters"- natural, or otherwise.

Our friend was a victim of Katrina. We sent him money. It was easier to transport and he was able to buy what he needed rather than have to wait for a shipment/delivery from us.
We offered him a place to stay until he could find housing. However, he was in Alabama and we are in Indy. He decided not to come home.

my friend was a victim of a super typhoon. they lost everything. i offered to let them stay at our home but she said they'll stay at her aunt's. i also offered her money which she also declined.
i gave them food instead. actually, i forced them to take it. they wouldn't accept it. and when my friend got back on her feet and was ready to go to school, i supplied her with notes, tutored her and everything.
