9 months was the average lifetime of a business cell phone in the USA during 2006 -- personal home cell phones are longer. Folks were doing a lot of upgrades -- this rate will perhaps continue for the next 5 years as new features are being introduced by many vendors.

957 Million cell phones were sold in 2006 (worldwide) and there are only 2.5 Billion cell phone accounts -- lots of new phones..

The good news is that most phone stores will re-cycle the old phones to recover the precious metals -- gold, silver, plus lithium from the batteries.

By lifetime do you mean how long they're used, or how long they're cool?

I've got a cell phone from 2001 that still works, although it needs a new battery if it's not plugged in for over 30 minutes...I've got another one from 2003 which works fine with a great battery that lasts longer than my new phone's battery.

My phones last for about a year or two before I upgrade.

carlo is closest (atleast he was serious)

. . . it depends if you get a top of the line phone . . . say a new "choclate" , it should last a good 4-5 years.

but if you get a standard phone (no special features, not "top of the line/ next genereation ((( i tunes, internet)))))) then i would say 1-3 years on avg.
