the answer to this question will vary a lot from state to state, and the answer will also depend on whether you are interested in starting salary, or average salary...average beginning teacher salaries have been on the rise over the past few years to attract more people to the field, but sadly this is not true for veteran teachers. In other words, the gap between teacher salaries and those of other professions may not be that great at the beginning level, but after a few years in the profession, the gap compared to those of other professions widens considerably.

average beginning teachers salaries range from 23,052 to 37,401 across the U.S., while a first year primary care physician will make between 90,000 and 150,000.
...and the gap widens further based on years of service

Here in Australia the starting salary in my state is around US$39,000 after a four year university degree. According to recent figures from the government, that is below the national average yearly earnings. Salaries for other professions with a four year university degree are much, much higher.

They're actually quite unpaid compared to another bachelor's degree holder. In my town they are paid 40,000 a year to start. I am in CA and we have a teacher shortage. They can start without their credentials if they are taking those classes at night. They start at 34,000 in that case. A good source to look and compare salaries for the ares is www.edjoin.org It's a school district job listing site. Just 20 miles south of us they start at 5000 more, so there's definately a difference!
