Im trying to install certain games that are dvd-rom but they are not being read by the drive but regular cd's work just fine.l

Also the drive used to be able to read

1. are you SURE that it is a dvd file?
2. does you dvd player have a sticker that says dvd rom?

It depends on the reader and the CD that the DVD is burned on. Your reader may only be able to read DVD-R or only DVD+R. The CD may be a DVD+ and your reader only reads DVD-. Check the device properties under your system properties menu. Most newer system read both + and -, however, older systems sometimes do not read both.

Is the DVD empty? If yes you might not the have a DVD burner.
But if the DVD is not empty, your Drive must be corrupted, use programs like NERO, ROXIO, or Alcohol 120% to detect the disk.

You also need dvd codecs for your dvd drive (if it was installed after you bought the computer).

See if there is any hair or dust in the drive. Does it light up and try to start the disk?

Try a CD. if that works, then idk. but if it doesn't, then your drive software could have accidently been deleted.
