it depends if your supplies cost alot, it might be hard to convince people to buy your product for a lot of money, so something cheap and stylish will go fast and profit will become high! if they are cheap supplies try something maybe a bit over how much you spent. like if your supplies costed $7.00 people would buy for $10.00 if it is really cool.

Unfortunately, with needlework like cross-stitch there is no way you can get the money you actually "deserve" for doing a piece. There are just too many hours put into it. Since someone commissioned it from you, don't you have to give them an idea of what it costs before you get started? Because of that, you would have to get an idea of how much the matting (best to use double matting) and framing will cost - it's more than framing a plain picture because they have to do the stretching of the piece, use acid-free materials, special spacers so the piece is kept away from the glass, etc. The person wanting it may want to have a specific molding chosen for the frame, too.
The last piece I had framed - the pic. was 8 by 10, and I think it was framed to 14 by 16, and was 150.
Now for your work - with most crafts in general, you would double the price of the materials. That would make the above piece $450. No one would pay that, no matter how beautiful it was. So it's you who has to make a judgement call, on the overall piece. It really is a piece of artwork, so it is up to you, the artist, to judge. Tough one.....

I do my own cross stitching because I do not want to pay the outrageous prices they sell for at craft fairs and so forth. The first one I ever did I had no problem with until I went to have it custom matted and frames. Yowza! Wow, now I understand why they charge so much. I wish I knew how to custom matte and frame my own. I am limited to doing projects that I can buy a precut matte and frame for. Don't undercharge for your work. Unless whoever is commissioning you knows anything about it, they won't understand how much time and effort goes in to it (and if you do it alot, you could develop hand, wrist, and eye trouble down the road...take that in to consideration). Is is worth it to do this for them? Think about it before you get too deep in to it.

RE:
How much do I charge to sell finished cross-stitch?
I have been commissioned to make a cross-stitch piece, frame and all, for the first time. I'm not sure how much to charge for the finished product. I know to charge for supplies, but then is the 'going rate' for the time I spend completing it? Thanks for the help.

Trying to keep track of the time you spend on a project for hire can be nerve wracking. For this reason most people charge by the stitch. I was trying to find a link but couldn't. Maybe you could ask around at your local craft store.?

It would have to depend on how much time you have put into each piece and if it is personalized. Yes you have to think about not putting the price to high but you'd be suprised at how much things go for at those country stores. Do some research at one of those old time stores but don't price it that high:)

WELL YOU MUST MAKE ADEQUATE PROFIT OR YOU WILL NOT WANT TO DO IT AGAIN.....KEEP TRACK OF YOUR MINUTES -HRS. USUALLY YOU DOUBLE THE COST OF GOODS & HOURS....IF THE COSTOF GOODS WAS 12.00 DOUBLE=24.00 PLUS THE HRS.10 HRS.@5.00 =50.00 X 2 =100.00 = TOTAL = 124.00 THATS IF YOUR TRAFFIC CAN BEAR WHAT YOU ARE PRODUCING......WE WORKED IN CUSTOM DRAPERIES FOR 30 YRS.--IT WAS NOT UNCOMMON SINCE WE MADE THE DRAPES & CORNICE BOARDS TO CHARGE KEYSTONE PROFIT IF IT COSTS 1.00 CHARGE 3.00 TO THE CUSTOMERS BE CAUSE IF NOT YOU WOULD NOT GET PAID FOR YOUR LABOR......THERE ARE SOME WHO CHARGED DOUBLE KEYSTONE-1.00--CHARGE 4.00---PARTLY BECAUSED WE INSTALLED FREE--YOU HAD TO USE AT LEAST KEYSTONE TO COME OUT.......A HOUSE FULL OF DRAPES MIGHT TAKE ALL DAY TO HANG---WE ALWAYS CHG. DOUBLE FOR RODS. I.E. DOUBLE OUR COST....THERE WERE SOME HIGH MARK SHOPS THAT CHARGED DOUBLE WHAT WE CHARGED----IT AL DEPENDS ON YOUR CLIENTELE----IN ORDER FOR US TO OPERATE WE ALWAYS GOT 50% DOWN---THE REASON IS YOU'LL HAVE FAR LESS QUIBLING AT THE END & YOU HAVE MONEY TO OPERATE ON......PLUS THEY WON'T BACK OUT 1/2 WAY THRU MAKING THE DRAPES ---THAT'S IMPORTANT SINCE YOU ARE MAKING A CUSTOM JOB--THAT WON'T BE WORTH ANYTHING TO ANYONE ELSE........
