I have a Dell XPS 400 with a Intell Pentuim D processor. If I want to upgrade to a core 2 do I have to buy a new motherboard?

You have to contact Dell to make sure. You have a compatible chipset, but there is something called the Voltage Regulator-Down (VRD) that also has to be compatible, and the only way to make sure it is compatible is to contact Dell, they don't list that type of stuff in the user manual.

EDIT: Just wanted to mention one thing, the whole Dell compatibility thing is mostly a myth. There are very few components that have to be specially ordered from Dell.

not at all.you are OK but if want to be safe contact dell. but they have same configuration hookup. and if you get the new one from dell you will be safe on warranty. I do it all the time and they don't stop my warranty.

Contact Dell and they can tell you what you can do, but if you do it you will void the warranty.
