A fraction is a portion of a whole thing, where all portions are in equal parts..

Half a cookie is 1/2 of a cookie. That means it is one of two parts of the cookie.

A pizza divided into 8 slices is divided into eighths. Each slice is 1/8 of the pizza. If you took 2/8's of the pizza, you took two of the eight slices that made up the pizza.

Some things we divide commonly, like measurements - an inch into 2 halves of an inch, or a 4 quarters of an inch, etc. Same with money - dimes are 1/10th of a dollar (10 dimes make a dollar). A quarter is 1/4 of a dollar. 4/4ths, or 4 quarters, make a dollar.

What is a Fraction

A fraction is the ratio of two whole numbers, or to put it simply, one whole number divided by another whole number. We write a fraction like this:

3
------
4

The top part of the fraction is called the numerator and is also referred to as the dividend of the fraction. The bottom part is called the denominator and is also referred to as the divisor of the fraction.

a fraction is a piece of a whole, represented over a line

imaging you have a pice and you have four people you wish to share the pie with

divide the pie by four slices, and each slice becomes a fraction of that 1 whole pie, shown as 1/4 every person recieves 1/4 of that 1 pie, 4/4 makes the pie whole again

to put it simple, fraction means "a part of" something... usually referring a to a whole.

in math terms a fraction is set up with numerators (the numbers on top) and denomenators(the numbers on bottom). the number on top represents how many of something you have while the number on bottom represents how many of something you need to make a whole.

a simple example is money.

there are a hundred pennies in a dollar
so one penny is 1/100 of a dollar(you have one penny in your quest to make a dollar)
37 pennies? 37/100 (you have 37 of a 100 pennies needed to make a dollar)

there are 4 quarters in a dollar
so one quarter can be 1/4 of a dollar(you have one of four pennies needed to make a dollar)

but those are fairly simplified ways of looking at it. i'm sure your math teacher will clarify the rest for you unless he's a total git.

but does that kinda clear it up?
don't fret... you'll learn it eventually.
good luck.
