"There is an Ip adress conflict with another system on the network"

I seem to get this error frequently now and my internet shows as connected, but is really not. I thought it was my router accepting too many connections, but I am really doubting it now! How do I get a different IP address? I cannot accept more than 50 connections from a P2P program and the router keeps going out.

Any solutions?

Appearantly there are two devices (like a printer and a computer, or two computers) that have the same IP address.
It doesn't have anything to do with your router accepting too many connections, it's more likely that when you turn your computer on, a device on your network already has the same address as your computer.
See if your computer has a fixed IP address by going to Start - Settings - Control Panel - Network Connections. In the box that opens up, right click on your network card, and select Properties. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), click Properties. In the page that opens, make sure the "Obtain IP Address automatically" is checked. If it isn't, write down all numbers in the screen, and check the box. Click OK untill you're back on your desktop (if necessary, restart your computer). See if you can surf the internet now.
If you have a wireless network, make sure none of your neighbours is "hitching a ride". Open the settings page of your router and limit the number of IP addresses it can hand out to 8 (providing you don't have more then 8 computers at home :) ). Or turn off DHCP completely and give all the PCs and printers at your home a static address (like the one you wrote down, changing the last digit for each device).

Well not a lot of info to go on here.

So you have 2 machines on your LAN side of the router that have the same IP address. Is this a wireless router by chance? If so maybe one of your neigbors is sponging off of your internet connection. If it is a wired LAN then you have another device that is using the same address.. turn off each machine one by one until the error goes away..

So you mention P2P program, are you operating a sharing site with P2P software? If so you may be running out of connections, and the program runs thru the 50 connections and cycles around and tries to assign the same IP address again.. Giving you an IP address conflict..

Stop the P2P software and see if the problem goes away..

You can click on "Renew IP address" (or "Repair", they are the same thing) in Control Panel, in WindowsXP.
If that doesn't work, restart your PC, RESET your router (maybe it's not a router, maybe it is an ADSL modem, or a cable modem). After the RESET, you might have to enter all the data (Account name, Password, type of connection to the internet etc...), this is done by entering the IP address of your router in Internet Explorer and there you enter the data...

you haven't supplied enough info about how your network is setup or even how many devices are on your LAN
