its around 14 hours for the 30g and 20 for the 80g, although those arnt the only factors. . .
it CAN last up to 14 hours if it has FULL battery at start and all you do is press play and then put the hold switch on.

. . . everytime you press a button on the iPod, it willl waist juice. but you've got to be constently switching to different songs located at the other end of your library if you're only gettin 7 hrs.

Battery life numbers are always quoted based on "optimized" settings, which for the iPod includes things like playback volume (keep it no higher than 1/4 volume for best results), backlight (reduce the overall brightness to about 10-20%, and set the backlight timer to 2 seconds), and, most importantly (especially for iPods with non-Flash harddrives) is keeping the music files defragmented.

For that last part, create one empty playlist, connect the iPod, deselect every playlist and just load up the empty one. Once it's all done doing that, reselect all the playlists that you want to upload, deselect the empty one, and resync. This will keep individual song files nice and tidy instead of making your iPod go chasing after bits and pieces that are scattered all over the drive, which will mean that it has to do less physical work to read them. This might help improve performance on a Nano or Shuffle, but not nearly as much as it will on the regular iPods or Minis.
