Good Question. When removing smells from laundry, it helps to know what kind of smell. Without that info, it is hard to say.

For really, really, smelly things, use 5 or 6 caps full of household ammonia to the wash water.

For pet smells and other odors, use Odorsout. Use 1 teaspoon in your wash. This was recommended year and years ago by Reader's Digest. It works really well.

soak it in vinegar before you wash it - only if it is white though. Put it in the sink half filled with water and put in about half a cup of vinegar - it will remove the stains and the underling causes. Now you will need to wash the garment a couple of times in the washer to get the smell of vinegar out -but it is easily washed out - and the vinegar will have already eaten away at the stains that caused the bad smell that wouldn't go away so you are set.

I am not sure what smells you want to get rid of. If you don't like the smell of detergants, they sell fragrance and die free detergants.
If you are trying to get rid of general odors, you use clear amonia.
Careful not to mix it with bleach, thats a deadly fume combination.
I put a load in the wash (ex. my husbands work out clothes or bed sheets) let the washer fill with water, with the temp. best suited for that fabric type, then I add 1/2 c. amonia and let it agitate for a minute then put the lid back up and let it soak for a couple hours with the lid up. I then shut the lid and just let it finish its cycle. My mom taught me this trick, works great.
I also like to use a fragrance free dryer sheet.
So whatever smell you are wanting to get rid off these tips are bound to do it. Good luck!!

Try Tide with Febreeze it makes and keeps the clothes smelling wonderful. Also try adding some 20 mule team borax in with the load, you can find in the laundry soap aisle

Hope this helps
Good Luck and God Bless

I had some towels that were a little smelly....they had been left in the washer over night wet...then every time we used them and they got damp...they smelled....so I put them in the washer filled them with hot water....put in a cup of baking soda....2 - 3 quarts of white vinegar...let it agitate a couple of minutes...and then let them soak for the day....I then let them spin out and washed them normal...it really did help...good luck.

It helps to run the washer empty once in a while, possibly with bleach or vinegar mixed in(not both at once). That will help clean out soap and dirt residue left in the washer.

I wash everything in hot, add my detergent, fabric softner, and some pinesol. If I'm hanging up, then wait till it's almost dry and take them down and put them in the dryer for about 10-15 minutes with one dryer sheet. If not hanging them up, then put them in the dryer with two dryer sheets.
