why is the ipod doing this?

I have an Ipod Second Genation, and my friend has a first generation. When He tried to plug the 1st generation into the usb port, it wont show up on iTunes. please tell me what is going on and how to fix it. Ten points to the solution that works best and the fastest. thanxs

You have to restore your ipod to factory settings by doing the following: Click start, all programs, ipod update, restore to factory, or update your ipod by doing the following: click start, all programs, ipod update and then update ipod. Hope this works.
