Im 16 and have been looking for a job. I have put several applications in but all of them say that they are accepting applications but not hiring. What exactly is the difference? and how long does it usually take to start working from the time that i submit the application to the time i start working. These are the places i have tried, sears, jcpenny, chucke cheese, marshalls, and burlington. Can you suggest other places that would hire me. I would prefer clothing stores

When they say they are accepting applications but not hiring it can mean one of two things. That they will keep you application on file for future hirings, or (sorry to be so blunt) but they just dont want you working there... (Im sorry to say Ive done that to a few people before). It all depends on the length of time after submitting an application. Most places dont like to hire minors because of labor laws and restricted hours. Try the mall! Go fill in a bunch of applications. A few days later, call to check on them. It never hurts to follow up! Make sure when you get that interview you bring along a resume. Get three teachers as references. On your resume include positive things about your school IE -Never missed a day, honors society, Band, choir. Extra curriculars are good too. Itll show responsibility. Good luck on your search! =o)

Most employers will accept applications and keep them on file for a certain period of time (this will vary from 30 days to 6 months depending on their policy). Since people change jobs frequently and business needs fluctuate they must be prepared to hire someone quickly without having to wait for people to apply for a specific job.

Try to keep your eye out for signs that say "Now Hiring" instead of just "accepting applications" when you're out and about. Don't limit yourself to one particular segment of retail (clothing stores). Any store in the shopping district will have basically the same duties...greeting and assisting customers, stock duties, sales, etc. All of these job skills are transferrable from one job to another and you can build on them as your career/work life progresses.

Make sure you are neat in your appearance when you apply for a job and maintain that appearance on the job.

Here are some of the don'ts...

Don't wear too much makeup or perfume. You're only 16 and you're not applying for a theatrical job and you don't want to overpower the boss with scent!

Don't show much skin. You want to be stylish but cleavage, tummies and lumbars are not to be seen in the workplace. Keep your attire on the conservative side but up to date.

Don't use slang! Your speech should be clear, audible and understandable. You're applying for a job not hanging with your friends.

Don't forget your manners! Sit (or stand) up straight, say please and thank you, answer questions with a short, clear statement and yes or no. Uh-huh and unh-uh aren't acceptable.

If you are fortunate enough to receive an interview remember to send a thank you note afterward. This is polite and will show that you have class and style!

Good Luck!

They may take applications for a later time, like for summer or Christmas or file them in the round file cabinet on the floor.
Usually when someone is hiring they put an ad in the paper and a sign on the store...Do you have friends who work in stores, ask if they are hiring and then have them put in a good word for you.
If you have a mall near by, try all the stores. Have you tried small 'boutique' stores ??? Shoe stores, candle stores, book stores...sometimes places hire 'interns'...radio stations, law offices, Military bases. (BX's, PX's, MCX's). Lowes, Home Depot, Fed-Ex, UPS....hotels, motels...restaurants....

Retail clothing store rarely hire high school students due to the limited hours that you can work. Your best bet is getting a position at a fast food restaurant

You should submit your resume to leading jobsite like www.monster.com, www.careerbuilder.com. Also you should consult local placement consultant in your area. In the meantime, look out for an option to work online. Although it wont pay you like full time job but you can make extra cash in your spare time. I am a part time worker doing work online at home, so I would like to share a link where you can make $600-$1500 in a month working at home. The work need to be done is posting/answering a discussion and uploading any photo/image of your interest. For details visit

I will publish few more genuine site in couple of weeks, where you can earn money. You may also write to me at talkofmoney@rediffmail.com (Note: When u are planning for a home based online work, be careful because most of them are scam and ask you to pay initial money. never pay money to any such site.)

If these places are close enough for you to get to, KEEP GOING BACK. All the jobs I've wanted, I just kept going back, about every 4-5days. Ask "Are you hiring yet""Wanted to check on the status of my app" One job- a reeeeeally nii-ice restaurant I went back 3 times, she finally goes "I'll hire you, but its gonna be for temporary Christmas help" I was there 8 years.

The best thing for you to do is to go register for free at job boards. Then you can browse their job listings and if you see something you like you can apply right there online and you know they are hiring. The following site has a bunch of free job boards
