Tanning is looked at as cosmetic. Cosmetics are for women. So the story goes. Also, many tanning salons have all female staff, which may make men uncomfortable. Tanning lotions many times have feminine names as well, such as Drama Queen, or Babie. This is a turn off for most men.

Men do tan though. I worked at a tanning salon for four years and 20% of our customer base was male. Granted 20% really isn't that much in the larger scheme of things, but it is a start at least, especially because our customer base was over 3000 people. Slowly but surely it is becoming more acceptable as the outbreak of "metrosexuals" comes to a climax. I personally have never seen a problem with it.

It all comes down to the fact that it is seen as a cosmetic thing and men are supposed to be rugged and not care. It really is an unnecessary stereotype.

People find it too feminine for the guys to do that. Well I mean if they're going to a tanning booth.

Just jealous that they, themselves, don't have the time to do it.
