A thick plate to stop the impact then a soft layer under it to absorb the impact - and also the shrapnel created on the hard plate.

Thick plate then a soft layer under it would work the best in my opinion. My best friend agrees, he even showed me an example on his character on WOW.

the first armor would work better. If the absorbent layer was on the front, then any blow would hit it dirrectly, therefore rendering it useless.

Probably the second one, because if some dude decided to stab you, they wouldn't expect that thick plate underneath.
