Because no sooner did he win liberty and self-determinaiton for india, than india broke apart based on muslims -vs-hindus. Muslims demanded their own nation, and so did sikhs.

The nation that he united against the british soon divided itself along religious lines, very much like iraq has done into sunni/shi'ite.

Even though muslim stood beside hindu and both beside sikh when they were winning their freedom, once the common enemy was gone, they began bickering.

The reason for his depression was that his country had been divided into India and Pakistan.

I Totally agree with GreyFox
it was mostly because the british also divided India And Pakistan when before they were one and not two separate countries!!
It caused TOO much blood shed between the hindus and the muslims as everyone was spreaded out into both the countries not knowing that they would also be divided one day in the future!!
