I know there are sites like dictionary.com which have that facility but unfortunately thats not for free. I was wondering if there were free online resources dealing with pronounciations/slangs etc.

I can't think of any, but I think you may be limiting yourself. You might be able to find an "electronic speaking dictionary" at a pawn shop, or on one of the auction sites. The Japanese love these, and my husband has one -- that he never uses! LOL!

This is more work, but maybe you could find an American who would be willing to help you with pronunciations in exchange for language lessons in your native language. Try to find one from a mid-Western state or Western state, because it is more likely that they will have "standard" pronunciation.

Remember that words differ in accent or stress depending on how they are used. A speaking dictionary might be able to help you with basic pronunciation, but not with "contextual" stuff.

Oh, one more thought -- you might look into resources for the blind. Good luck!
